A lot of people are of the opinion that school is nothing more than either a daycare service or a place for your children to socialize. While we do need to face facts and admit that these are both at least parts of the truth, there are also other reasons why they go to school. And a major part of that reason is that, at some point in your kids’ lives, they are going to want to be a part of something which is bigger than they are. And that something is going to have a plan to it, and they are going to want to conform a little bit, in order to be a part of that plan.
There is a very big push in our society toward making sure that everybody’s individual creative power is being realized. And while this is definitely a good thing, it can hurt the natural tendency that people have for working together on things. After all, we are a social species, and that sociability comes at the slight cost of having to put down our individual egos from time to time. It is just a necessary part of living and working within a society.
So when a teacher plans out their curriculum, they are out to do more than just administer a new set of skills to their students. While that is certainly a part of the deal, they are also out to teach their students how to work with others within the framework of a group where there are rules, expectations, and some humility involved. While a student may grow up to be exceptional, first they need to learn how to work with a group of equals.
